Light and Medium Contact Martial Arts

There are many different types of martial art sports. Many forms of martial arts practice light to medium contact if no actual contact at all. There are many things to consider with this type of martial art sport which include the restrictions, points, protective equipment, and much more.

All forms of martial arts teach discipline and self defense. The primary purpose of martial arts is for the self discipline that it teaches you. Many people study martial arts for strictly self defense. Others practice martial arts for the sport and the enjoyment. They like getting together with their friends to practice the moves on each other. This can be a very competitive sport for many people.

There are forms of martial arts that do not practice full contact force when striking one another or fighting against an opponent. The most common forms of light and medium contact forms of martial arts include fencing and taekwondo. Obviously when you are fencing you are not really going to stab your opponent with a sword but you are going to touch a part of their body to get the point. This is fun for many people the practice. It is common to practice sports like this to get into great body shape and for mental balance.

There are many restrictions in the game when you are practicing any type of martial arts with light to medium contact. The amount of force that is used to hit an opponent is always monitored to strictly touch contact. For example, when you go in for a punch it should be pulled as quickly or prior to making contact on the opponent with light contact. Medium contact doesn’t require the punch to be entirely pulled away but the person is not allowed to use full force when striking the other person. This means that you are not allowed in any way to completely knock out your opponent because you would be disqualified for breaking the rules.

When you practice or compete in martial arts protective equipment is required. Even if you are competing in light or medium contact martial arts sports mistakes can happen. It is best to protect your body. Some competitions and practices require you to wear head, hand, chest, groin, and even feet protection when playing. Light and medium contact martial arts are not the same as full contact. Full contact means that you strike the opponent with full force and the goal is to knock the person out. When you play light to medium contact the goal is to get the points through the would be touch or contact but not to actually make full force contact with the opponent.
